Her photographs range from intimate human moments to landmark historical events, demonstrating that she was an artist with profound moral roots."Dagmar Hochová's work is always rooted in the values of humanity and freedom, which radiate clearly from her photographs. The exhibition offers a comprehensive view of Hochová’s oeuvre – spanning from school exercises and commissioned works to photographs documenting the emergence of a democratic society post-1989," says Magdalena Juříková, Director of the Prague City Gallery.The exhibition includes 150 original prints in black and white, and for the first time, it presents her school work created under the guidance of the renowned Czech photographer Jaromír Funke. Visitors will see photographs from different stages of her life and career, including her work for magazines and publishers, photographs from the Prague Spring period and the years of normalisation that followed.&nbsp; An important section features photographs from the period of Czech democracy's formation after 1989, such as those from the Aurora Club – where the Civic Forum had one of its headquarters in November 1989 – and from the Czech National Council, where Hochová also served as a deputy. The exhibition also includes socially conscious series from institutions and rural communities, alongside a unique collection of photographs of World War I legionnaires. It is complemented by period magazines, posters, books, and photographs of her contemporaries. The exhibition also features two video projections and audio recordings in which Hochová herself discusses her life and work.The Moravian Gallery in Brno spent twelve years processing an extensive archive of 130,000 negatives, which it acquired. Thanks to this digitisation, a new insight into Hochová’s life and work has become possible. "The archive of any artist’s negatives offers a close and intimate insight into their life and work. You will understand the links between different parts of their work, discover their personal and social connections, and gain insight into why certain things happened the way they did. Her main themes were people and human relationships, and she aimed to capture humanity in an authentic manner. She photographed in black and white using only basic technical equipment to preserve the atmosphere and natural light. She was particularly acclaimed for her photographs of children, whom she regarded as symbols of freedom, as well as her portraits of important personalities and her documentation of significant moments in Czechoslovak history. Throughout her career, she also dedicated many years to the theme of old age, documenting important cultural events. Dagmar Hochová: From Children to Democracy. Exhibition at the GHMP Dům fotografie (House of Photography) Reveals Unknown Faces of Renowned Photographer

Prague City Gallery (GHMP) has prepared the first extensive retrospective of photographer, graphic designer and artist Pavel Jasanský. From 6 May to 31 August, GHMP Dům fotografie will offer a comprehensive view of his rich and multifaceted life's work, which innovatively spanned photography, painting, sculpture and video. Jasanský is best known for his photographic and design collaborations for numerous records, posters and multimedia productions. However, the exhibition—and the extensive monograph prepared by curator Pavel Vančát—focus primarily on his non-commissioned documentary and multimedia work.<component-embed-media src="https://s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/mediaboard-publishing/blogs/5TwHddycqSc88mGvpSrPbXMwORHSj3vO" alt="" visible_alt="true" url="https://www.ghmp.cz/vystavy/pavel-jasansky/" content_type="image/jpeg" type="image"></component-embed-media>The artistic career of Pavel Jasanský (1938–2021), who held a degree in geology, began in the bohemian milieu of the 1960s, when he photographed emerging musicians and also produced photographs for the Viola poetic wine bar and graphic designs for the Divoké víno magazine. From the late 1960s, he collaborated on photographs and designs for numerous LP records, posters and exhibition productions, but in the 1980s, Jasanský turned away from all this and established himself as one of the key figures in Czech photography. His creative courage ranked him among the pioneers of "intermedia" art.“From being a worker in the world of magazines, gramophone records and exhibitions, he elevated himself to become a truly supreme creator of images that paradoxically, yet logically, deny their own existence, whether in the broad genre of negative painterly gestures or, in the case of his key cycle New Landscape, New Inhabitants, through the complete detachment of the works from their creators and audience. Jasanský's world, presented as an endless, purposeless and overwhelming maze of self-serving images, which we ourselves can explore with interest, reflection, and amusement, is still completely relevant today," states curator Pavel Vančát.Jasanský's pivotal work, the New Landscape, New Inhabitants series (1985–1990), shows, in a general sense, the feelings of a sensitive individual at the peak of the modern age, overwhelmed by visual information. At the end of the first decade of capitalism, Jasanský embarked on the Botič series (1998–2001). On the threshold of the digital age, he surprisingly chose a large panoramic format of black-and-white negatives to create visual memories of the places of his childhood, where he had taken his first photographs and which were transformed under two different political regimes.The exhibition at GHMP Dům fotografie will also feature the Paristory series (1967–1976) from his trips to Paris, which earned Jasanský artistic recognition and showed him to be a photographer of exceptional empathy and insight. He applied these same qualities in his depictions of the emotionally charged microcosms of institutions, hospitals and cemeteries.The final chapter of Jasanský's work is a project entitled Signed Photos (1965–2015). In this comprehensive album, he collected signed portraits of his relatives, friends, colleagues and international celebrities, taken from the 1960s to the turn of the millennium. It is a chronicle of the artist's own life, embodied in the lives of others.The counterpart of Jasanský's documentary work is his multimedia work. This began with his collaboration on the Most project (1981–1982), which consisted of sculptural and environmental interventions in the demolished historic centre of the city, which was forced to make way for relentless coal mining. The culmination of his intermedia efforts is arguably the first "video sculpture" in what is the Czech Republic today. The enormous installation The Viewer (1989) combines existentially conceived photo canvases with added paintings in ink and a sculpture of a seated figure with a television screen for a head. To this day, it remains an impressive image of the abrasive media subconscious of the late 1980s.The exhibition will also feature examples of the artistic experiments that Pavel Jasanský began in the late 1970s: Heads and Imprints and the Bodies project, created in collaboration with dancers Eva Černá and Karel Vaněk.Pavel Jasanský's work reflects his struggle with time and with the era in which he lived, which he approached with subtlety and irony. "On behalf of the entire family, I am delighted that the exhibition at GHMP Dům fotografie crowns almost two years of work organising my father's rich archive. Last autumn, we presented a selection of his promotional work at the Dobeška Theatre, and a few days ago, we opened an exhibition of his photographs of artists at the Fine Art Archive in DOX. The retrospective exhibition of Tono Stano, one of the most renowned photographers in Central Europe, will be on display at the GHMP exhibition spaces in the Municipal Library from 16 April to 24 August 2025. Stano's distinctive style is based on staged photography; however, in addition to classic portraiture, the exhibition also features his experimental and conceptual series. As a student of photography at FAMU in Prague, he distinguished himself with a sharp break from the established models of school practice, alongside his other classmates from Slovakia. His work has influenced generations of photographers both domestically and internationally. Stano is especially known for his figurative compositions, including the world-famous work Sense. "He carefully arranges individual scenes, creating various situations in which the human, particularly female, body is the key element. “Nudity in Stano's rendition is a natural part of human life, his photographs can be both titillating, humorous and provocative, as there is overstatement, a desire for beauty, greatness and infinity,” say the curators.Tono Stano is also famous for his photographs of notable international and Czech cinema personalities, captured since 1997 during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Though often regarded as the festival’s “official” portraitist, his collaboration began spontaneously.To this day, he selects who he photographs, as well as the time and environment for each session. Most actresses, actors and film-makers appreciate Stano's unique approach and are eager to engage with the scenarios he designs. The resulting collection of photographs complements the festival’s equally original jingles. Tono Stano: Prague City Gallery Opens an Exhibition of Photographs

Troja Château is transforming into The Palace of (Leisure) Time for this season. This is the name of the exhibition that will be opened to public in Troja Château on 4 April 2025 by Prague City Gallery. Curators Karla Hlaváčková and Veronika Čechová revisit the history of the Baroque building, which originally served as a summer retreat for the nobility, and examine how we spend our free time today. The Palace of (Leisure) Time primarily features young artists and a selection of works that relate to leisure, not only through the nature of the medium – such as embroidery and ceramics – but also through questions associated with the theme of leisure, such as: Do we allow ourselves to do nothing these days, or are we constantly pushed to be productive? But what should we fill it with? Nowadays, we have a plethora of activities to choose from, which often makes us fear that if we slow down and relax for a moment, something will be missed. Can we truly 'do nothing'? Are free moments rare? And what does the much-discussed balance between leisure and work look like? There are many questions that relate to this topic. The Palace of (Leisure) Time will therefore present the works of 14 artists and groups who look at it from different angles," says curator Karla Hlaváčková.Do people need to feel fulfilled by their work, or do they need a high salary, benefits and plenty of vacation days to compensate for a lack of fulfilment? In his work Frieze/Vlys, Zbyněk Baladrán addresses the functioning of the labour market with an element of exaggeration, presenting four images that, due to their visual treatment, resemble the art of various ancient cultures. Judita Levitnerová reflects on sedentary labour by using an office carpet into which she imprints various forms of a seated person.In their work Teabags on Eyelids II, Barbora Zentková and Julia Gryboś point to the societal pressure on individuals in modern society to avoid looking tired and to consistently be productive. Through dyeing fabrics with tea and engaging in manual work with the fabric, the artists emphasise the need to slow down, confronting the pressure to perform through the almost ritualistic repetition of tedious tasks.However, leisure time is also associated with idleness – doing nothing, watching superficial soap operas, or scrolling through Instagram reels. Relaxing activities such as applying a face mask or reading under a blanket can be found in Eva Volfová's embroidery series. Roman Štětina's Lost Case uses the famous Columbo series, connecting scenes that go nowhere – they don't create a cohesive story and flow while Columbo gradually ages. For the exhibition, Johana Hnízdilová created a vase inspired by the terracotta vases found in the grounds of Troja Château, into which she inserted black glass referencing the ubiquity of displays in everyday life.According to the curators, the exhibition does not provide advice or clear instructions on how to spend leisure time but aims to encourage visitors to reflect on how they handle their free time and whether they allow themselves to be idle.Accompanying Programme: Radio Wave concerts, workshops and an open-air cinemaThe Troja Château, along with its adjacent gardens and maze, forms the so-called Troja Labyrinth, which will host an accompanying programme to The Palace of (Leisure) Time exhibition as well as several exhibitions in public spaces until the end of October. "We continue our successful cooperation with Radio Wave. Last year, we jointly organised a series of discussions and concerts at various places on the premises under the title Opulence. This year, the programme, entitled Riviera, will take place on 15 July, 5 and 26 August. At the end of August and the beginning of September, guided tours of the outdoor exhibition are planned, along with an open-air cinema," adds Agáta Hošnová from the Art for the City programme, which organises this year’s accompanying programmes at the Labyrinth.The Education Department of Prague City Gallery has prepared thematic workshops for adults and children in the orangery, focusing on ceramics, textiles, embroidery, weaving and plant decorations. Interactive tours of the exhibition will also be available for all types of schools and other age and interest groups. Troja Château is transforming into The Palace of (Leisure) Time for this season. This is the name of the exhibition that will be opened to public in Troja Château on 4 April 2025 by Prague City Gallery. Curators Karla Hlaváčková and Veronika Čechová revisit the history of the Baroque building, which originally served as a summer retreat for the nobility, and examine how we spend our free time today.

The Palace of (Leisure) Time: Prague City Gallery opens
the season of Troja Château with an exhibition exploring how we spend our free time

Games are no longer merely a leisure activity; they have evolved into a language, a culture, and a vital component of art. Principles of gaming are increasingly integrated into the works of an emerging generation of artists, who utilise these concepts to reflect on the world around us, re-examine the boundaries of human identity and help us envision alternative futures. Enter the Room, presented by Prague City Gallery at the Stone Bell House from 28 March to 14 September 2025, continues the tradition of the Biennial of Young Artists, which took place in this space from 1994 to 2010.<component-embed-media src="https://s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/mediaboard-publishing/blogs/0Zx5z7mtHXCwAYM6YMpgM9yF0F8NzMb6" alt="" visible_alt="true" url="https://www.ghmp.cz/en/exhibitions/enter-the-room/" content_type="image/jpeg" type="image"></component-embed-media>The exhibition transforms the gallery into an extended gaming field, creating a dynamic "playground" that evolves depending on how visitors interact with it. "The exhibition invites visitors to get actively involved and think about finding their own role in a changing world," explains Sandra Baborovská, the author of the exhibition. The project underscores the growing interconnection between the digital and physical realms, reflecting on how gaming elements permeate contemporary art. While the artists draw on established formats of moving images, performance and gallery installations, they deconstruct in them the possibilities of game narratives and mechanics.Visitors will encounter works that explore the overlooked yet ubiquitous connections between humans and their digital extensions. The exhibition is based on the assumption that the previously important boundary between human and technological frameworks never existed. The combination of these post-humanist assumptions and gaming principles then invites the general public to reconsider their existing understanding of reality or to refine that understanding further.The title Enter the Room refers to a metaphor that is based on the similarity to some gaming terrains in which the style of storytelling changes with each room you enter. In the same way, the visitor to the exhibition can progress through the observed section of the scene and discover the diverse approaches and forms created by the artists represented in the exhibition. The doors themselves, which subdivide the space of the Stone Bell House and whose visuality also refers to the gaming environment, are a site-specific intervention by the designer of the exhibition and game artist Vojtěch Radakulan.Game as a Space for Critical Reflection and Vision of the FutureThe exhibition is arranged on two floors. On the first one, the installations mainly concern the field of ecology and speculations regarding the alternative futures of our civilisation. On the second floor, the exhibition critically analyses gaming principles as such.Environmental grief and responsibility for the future world are the main themes of the French-Dutch duo Eloïse Bonneviot and Anne de Boer who allow players to explore environmental change and species relationships in Tracing a Seeping Terrain (2023). Natalia Sýkorová and Valérie Dinková depict the post-apocalyptic reality of a post-flood world in their work their calls echoing through the flood (2024-2025), while Sýkorová and Berlin-based set designer Frederik Britzlmayr address environmental grief and the possibilities of collective regeneration in their site-specific video installation Brood – Stranger's Vial – Womb (2024–2025). The video installation Brood – Stranger's Vial – Womb and the work of the art collective BCAA system (No Blade of Grass, 2021) are the last works displayed on the first floor of the Stone Bell House. Both of them are based on recordings of so-called LARPs (Live Action Role Play) – a gaming principle balancing on the border of prescribed scenarios and improvisation.While the aforementioned works envision the future with a certain amount of melancholy, others treat the same theme with ironic detachment. In Little Curies (2024–2025), Vojtěch Radakulan hyperbolically draws attention to the long-term risks posed by radioactive waste, which is invisible yet will fundamentally impact future generations. The No Fun collective's installation Colossus (2024–2025) builds a fictional world after the collapse of capitalism and experiments with alternative models of society.The tarot, one of the oldest analogue games in the world, is the theme of three works in the exhibition. In Ultimate Spread Logics (2022–2025), a digitised version of the tarot created by artificial intelligence, Filip Hauer and Phillip Kolychev link random algorithms to images of global crises, offering an ironic take on our ability to predict the future. Ondřej Trhoň's Millennial Tarot Simulator (2023) addresses the uncertainties and existential anxiety of the millennial generation in the context of work, media and the economy. The Berlin-based OMSK Social Club's The Living Virtual Theater (2020) uses the principle of the tarot as a tool for collective storytelling and intuitive decision-making.The deconstruction of gaming principles is explored by Tomáš Moravanský (INSTITUT INSTITUT) with his Carpet Stories IV and the Herdek collective, experimenting with interactive storytelling. Jan Boháč, Viktor Dedek and Jonáš Richter in their installation In the Shadows of the Main Character (2024–2025) discuss the phenomenon of the supporting game character and its autonomy, thus questioning the boundary between the player and the passive observer.All of the works, which the visitor can become a part of, not only reflect the current crises but also explore possible futures – sometimes dystopian, sometimes full of new possibilities. In any case, they invite the viewer to actively participate and question established social structures. "I think that linking gaming principles with current issues opens up new possibilities to reach the younger generation and stimulate a society-wide discussion. I believe that the exhibition will strengthen Prague's position as a centre of progressive art in Central Europe. The Stone Bell House will be temporarily transformed into a gaming field. The exhibition continues the tradition of the Biennial of Young Artists and gives space to a new generation of artists working with media and approaches typical of 21st century visual culture.The exhibition will include an accompanying programme in the form of guided tours, a concert organised in collaboration with Radio Wave or special events related to specific works of art.
